Hands that have shaped only wood

“The machine only spins the wood.
It is the hand that gives it shape.”
— Master craftsman, Seongchang Craft
  1. 一

    Masters of wooden tableware

Bowls, plates and lidded boxes — things you hold every day — are what we turn best, reading the grain and thickness by hand.

  2. 二

From volume runs to TV props

We copy one sample into hundreds of identical pieces, made with the care TV broadcasters trust for their props.

  3. 三

Not sure how? Let’s figure it out

If you don’t know how something should be made, we’ll find the way to turn it together.

The Process

From a Block of Wood to a Finished Piece

The lathe spins the wood fast; the craftsman sets his blade against it and carves the shape.

Mount the timber
Turn it round
Shape the base
Cut the collar
Smooth and finish

Mount the timber. Timber chosen for its grain is cut to size, centred and mounted on the lathe. The piece behind it was turned earlier to the same shape.
